Have you been like me—puzzling for the past ten days about why the city needs to fund a $60,000 Marketing and Volunteer organizing position when there are so many infrastructure needs in town?
1) The city just finished building a new gazebo because the old one wasn’t maintained, making me wonder how other city facilities are not being maintained.
1) We have potholes in the streets and eroding alleys, which the garbage trucks can no longer travel because they are not maintained. 2) At the last council meeting the administrator detailed problems with a couple of the water pumps in the city wells—only that didn’t make The Pioneer. I guess it isn’t important that one of the pumps either fell to the bottom of the well or is stuck in it. 4) Of course, the sidewalks have not been maintained because the Sidewalk Committee was disbanded 5 or 6 years ago. 5) The pickleball/tennis courts, which get a great deal of use, are cracking and will need to be resurfaced soon.
Perhaps the city intends to use volunteers to resurface the courts, fix the potholes, and repair the alleys? Or maybe they intend to organize some more pool parties, like the one last night that blasted music all through the neighborhood, ended at 11:30 with banging the lid on the dumpster and left the lights on. So you paid to light up pool and park all night.
