Defrosted & Fat Farming in Florida
Located in a
shopping center, L.A. Fitness has nearly 100 machines beyond the desk
where a couple sleek young people check membership I.Ds. Apparatus clacks
and clangs as red-faced folks huff and puff to buffdom. On a balcony
above the main floor are the larger running and ellipticals.
Past the machines
on the east side of this mammoth structure is series of
plexi-glassed-in rooms--the far end, a basketball court, next to it,
several hand & racquetball courts and at the end a room large
enough to accommodate over 50 people for classes in Yoga, Zumba, Step
Sculpt, Kick-box Cardio and Boot Camp Conditioning. The pool where
Aquafit classes are held is through the labyrinthine dressing room.
Thursday we did
weight lifting class and stationary bikes. Friday, ending the
week on a peaceful note, yoga. Saturday Spin and yoga. In Spin, three
dozen people mount stationary bikes so close their elbows rub, ride a
course under the direction of a young man hollering when there is a
hill—you turn up the resistance on your machine and pump like mad.
The electronic music was deafening; the smell oppressive, and I fled
after ten minutes. In the p.m., we swam in the outdoor pool. Sunday
we took a break, biked a bit and walked in the woods.

Eye peeled for pix from a Florida Nature walk.
Dear Critical Eye,
ReplyDeleteFor some words of encouragement on the 'new' electronic music tastes here is an interesting quote from Wikipedia:
Ferruccio Busoni published Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music, which discussed the use of electrical and other new sound sources in future music. He wrote of the future of microtonal scales in music, made possible by Cahill's Dynamophone: "Only a long and careful series of experiments, and a continued training of the ear, can render this unfamiliar material approachable and plastic for the coming generation, and for Art."
Maybe the training of the critical ears has begun ... which will lead to an addicting beat to get those legs spinning so fast the bike takes flight!
